Doctors promised security, end stir

Doctors were protesting after their colleagues were manhandled by relatives of patients

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister and health minister Dr T. Rajaiah said on Wednesday that cameras would be installed in government hospitals for the protection of junior doctors who are on duty round the clock. Moreover, a special protection force too will keep the doctors safe.

During a meeting with the doctors of Gandhi and Osmania hospitals, who had been on a strike for three days, the minister stated that the incident was very unfortunate and the doctors’ safety was very important.

Over 40 relatives of two patients had abused a post-graduate female doctor, and when she had complained to her service in-charge, he was manhandled. Three relatives have been arrested by the Chilkulguda police and have been booked for man-handling the doctors.

Dr Sai Kiran said, “We knew the patients were put through a lot of inconvenience, but these incidents should be brought to the notice of the government. We don’t want a temporary security arrangement. We want a full-fledged one so that we can work freely in the hospital.”

After the health minister’s assurance, the doctors called off the strike. Home minister Nayini Narsimha Reddy, meanwhile, said an inquiry would be conducted into the Gandhi hospital incident and proper steps would be taken to provide security.

Mr Reddy said, “If doctors are attacked, who will treat the patients? The minister also asked the doctors to join their duties immediately as patients had been put through a lot of inconvenience.
