CMDA cracks whip, to scour for violators

CMDA has constituted 19 teams, to closely examine about 700 buildings in Chennai

Chennai: The CMDA has constituted 19 teams, each comprising three specialists, to closely examine about 700 buildings in and around Chennai in the aftermath of the June 28 Mowlivakkam construction collapse that killed over 48 and injured several.

“The CMDA teams will examine approximately 700 buildings under construction within the CMDA limits. We are working towards ensuring that the builders not only comply with the planning parameters and do not resort to deviations, but also ensure absolute safety in their constructions”, CMDA member secretary A. Karthik said.

He said considering the manpower limitations at the CMDA, the inspections would first cover the multistoreyed buildings and special buildings with 50 dwellings or having total area of 50,000 sq ft and above. Once this is completed, the CMDA teams would go down to other special buildings under 50,000 sq before moving on to inspect buildings that are under construction, and also those which have been completed and their builders have applied for completion certificates.

“We will also inspect buildings that have been recently given the completion certificates. We have been so far looking at the adherence to planning parameters and checking if any deviations are made but now we will closely examine the structures for the safety aspects too”, Mr Karthik said.
