Sheila Dikshit on Centre’s hitlist

Maharashtra Governor too might face the wrath; MHA will write to President

New Delhi: The Centre is determined to go ahead and remove those Governors who have refused to step down so far despite repeated reminders from the home ministry. This would be the first time that the Centre would seek removal of a Governor.

Shekhar Dutt, Ashwini Kumar and M.K. Narayanan have all resigned following home ministry’s request.

Highly placed sources said the home ministry will soon write to the President seeking the removal of Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit and Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan. Both of them have so far refused to accept Centre’s message of putting in their papers.

Earlier, it was being speculated that Ms Dikshit would be shifted to a smaller state. But now, sources said, the Union government has decided not to transfer her.

Sources said home secretary Anil Goswami called up the Maharashtra Governor twice but he refused to step down arguing that he would obey only a competent authority.’

The Centre has worked out a strong argument to be sent to the President as there is a perception that a Governor cannot be removed. But, sources said that legal experts have told the Centre that a Governor can be removed, if the incumbent loses trust of the Centre.
