Kochi to get grade 1 street lights

High pressure Sodium Vapour lamps at an average gap of 25 metres will be installed

Kochi: Soon, travelling in the city will not be in the dark because the city is all set to get Grade 1 road illumination similar to big cities like Bangalore and Delhi.
Thanks to the Kochi metro project, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will set up high pressure Sodium Vapour lamps at an average gap of 25 metres all throughout the 25-km stretch from Aluva to Pettah at an estimated cost of Rs 3.47 crore.

“We’ve finally decided to go in for Grade one Road Illumination (as per Indian Road standards) matching the standards of big cities. We’ll remove the present streetlights at the medians. High-mast lamps will be used during the construction and after that the sodium lamps will be set up,” DMRC sources said.

The project will see almost 40, 000 streetlights, almost double the number of streetlights as compared to the present in the stretch between Aluva and Pettah. The lights have already been installed on North RoB and Banerjee Road.

“The tenders have been floated and the last date for submission is on Wednesday. The work will be completed in a year’s time from the date of awarding the contract,” they said.
Currently, most of the streetlights installed by the Corporation are not functioning, especially in areas like MG Road.
