Congress to bank on Telgu Desam
Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress, which lost five MLCs to the TRS, is facing yet another challenge from the ruling party ahead of the election of the chairman in the Legislative Council on July 2. The Congress was the single largest party with 17 MLCs in the Council which presently has 36 members.
TRS president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao managed to win over five Congress, two TD MLCs and two independents. The TRS otherwise had only six MLCs. Mr Rao, who is also Leader of the Legislative Council, has suddenly decided to conduct the election to the vacant Chairman’s post with a view to winning it for the TRS.
He is confident of getting majority support, with help from the MIM and other Independents. The TRS is looking to get two Congress MLCs and one from the TD to defect The Congress, which is now down to 12, is trying to field its own candidate. It is banking on the support of Independents and also the TD, which too is bothered by desertions.
“All the key persons like Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Jana Reddy and me along with MLCs will be meeting at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday to take stock of the situation,” said Leader of Opposition in Council D. Srinivas.
