Sudden showers inundate several roads in Chennai

Chennai: Heavy rain and thunderstorm lashed across the city on Saturday evening bringing much needed respite from the scorching heat. Due to the heavy down pour, several parts of the city was inundated leaving motorists stuck on arterial roads for longer periods.

According to S.R. Ramanan, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre here, the rainfall was caused by convenctional currents and was a temporary phenomenon. "We cannot predict that the rainfall will continue tomorrow as these systems form within a few hours. It is possible that it might rain again," Ramanan told this newspaper. While the Nungambakkam weather station recorded around 2 cm rainwall, Meenambakkam recorded over 6 cm of rain, met officials said.
