Good monsoon can revive Telangana, Andhra Pradesh power generation

Both states are feeling heat of severe power crisis with seven to eight hours of power cuts

Hyderabad: Both AP and Telangana are feeling the heat of a severe power crisis with seven to eight hours of power cuts in the twin cities and upto 14 hours in districts. With Telangana and Andhra Pradesh both not having booked the available transmission corridor in advance, purchase of power has become difficult, leaving officials to pin their hopes on good monsoons. Even if there is a below average monsoon in the month of July, the situation will still be under control, said officials.

What might come as a small respite for both the states is that the commissioning of another transmission corridor, the Raichur-Sholapur link connected to Tanur, that was booked by the joint state prior to the bifurcation, is near completion. This would support an additional 300 to 400 MW of power . Both states have also started tying up for additional purchases from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. However largely, the power situation in July will be dependent on monsoons.

Citizens meanwhile face tough times as officials are not responding to their desperate calls for restoring power supply or even taking down their complaints. “There is a regular power cut problem since three months in our area. Currently, power cuts are implemented for 10 hours” said an angry resident from Nadergul.

As for industries they are suffering upto 160 to 200 man hours loss to power cuts The AP state, which is currently reeling under a severe crisis, the situation might improve with the Krishnapatnam stage-II which is expected to be fully operational by August. Currently, the plant is generating around 200 MW of power which will go upto 800 MW in another month.
