Yet another pipe burst due to metro piling works, water supply cut off
The incident took place at 6.30 pm during Metro’s pile capping works
Kochi: In the third such incident in over a month, a 300-mm cast iron pipeline burst near the Kochi Metro’s worksite at Palarivattom Junction on Friday evening, cutting off water supply to areas like Palarivattom, Stadium, Edapally and Kunnumpuram.
The incident took place at 6.30 pm during Metro’s pile capping works and water began to gush out. Soon the Kerala Water Authority was informed of the mishap and officials rushed to the spot.
“We’ve started excavation to detect the damaged portion though we managed to stop the leak by closing the valves. Water supply to some areas of the city is expected to be hit on Saturday. This time the water logging has been less compared to the earlier incident at Kaloor and so we expect to fix it soon,” a KWA official said.
The DMRC said the contractor L & T was caught unwares by the presence of the pipeline at the stretch and the KWA had not warned it despite its request for sketches of the underground utilities in the area.
Earlier on June 9, the main pipeline from Aluva was damaged due to the Metro construction work, disrupting water supply to key city areas for nearly two days.
