Ulfa leader Anup Chetia to be deported to India
New Delhi: The NDA government’s tough stand on dealing with terror seems to be yielding favourable results as Bangladesh has, for the first time, conveyed its willingness to remove all possible legal hurdles in deporting top Ulfa commander Anup Chetia.
Sources said the Indian delegation, led by foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, which is currently visiting Dhaka has strongly raised the issue of Chetia’s deportation with the authorities.
The key Ulfa operative is said to be in “protective custody’’ on the outskirts of Dhaka these days.
The Indian delegation also made it clear to Dhaka as to how certain elements in its security establishment were creating “deliberate stumbling blocks’’ in sending Chetia back.
The office of the National Security Advisor had in a background note sent to the MEA in connection with Ms Swaraj’s Bangladesh visit also stressed on the need that New Delhi should impress upon Dhaka to deport Chetia.
Bangladesh has so far refused to send back the Ulfa commander primarily ducking under legal provisions arguing that he has already petitioned the SC against his deportation.
But Indian intelligence agencies here feel that this is a deliberate ploy by some Bangladeshi security agencies and Pakistan’s ISI who want to ensure that Chetia remains in that country.
This is precisely the reason why New Delhi prevailed upon Dhaka to ensure that it should clear all legal hurdles in sending back Chetia.
