Chennai: Gold heist case solved
Chennai: City police on Friday claimed to have solved a 4.8 kilo gold heist by a seven-member gang about ten days ago in T. Nagar by arresting a key member in Tiruchy and recovering 3.25 kilos of jewels.
Brothers Vishal and Nikhil had their shop on NSC Bose Road and made jewels against orders placed by prominent jewellery houses in the city. On June 18, they took two bags of such jewels for delivery at shops in T.Nagar. While Nikhil waited in their car outside a jewellery on Nageswara Rao Road, with a jewel bag placed on the backseat, Vishal had gone into the shop to deliver the jewels packed in another bag.
“That was when the gang struck. A man knocked on the driver’s window and told Nikhil that his brother had dropped cash on the ground. Nikhil got down and started gathering the ten-rupee notes. Quickly and quietly, the gang opened the car’s rear door and fled with the leather bag containing 4.8 kilos of jewels,” joint commissioner of police (south), R. Thirugnanam said.
He said special police teams were formed to catch the thieves and one of them nabbed a gang member, Azhagu Raja of the notorious Ramji Nagar of Tiruchy at the town bus stand just before he could flee on Friday. Police recovered 231 gold chains weighing 3.25 kilos, worth Rs 82 lakh, from him. He told the investigators that his six teammates had gone to Chembur in Mumbai to sell part of the booty. Raja has been remanded to custody and the search for the rest of the gang intensified, according to Mr Thirugnanam.
