Mumbai: Season 7 of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is very different from what we have seen so far. From the costumes of the judges as well as the contestants, to the dances themselves, everything has undergone a makeover. And this season is also a bit more scandalous. Some viewers in fact, are finding it embarrassing to watch this Jhalak with kids.
Meanwhile, Salman Yusuf Khan and Lauren Gottlieb from Season 6 are the challengers this season and they continue to challenge contestants to raise the bar. And the duo’s sensuous Karmagraphy has already sparked a debate, Aren’t their dance moves too explicit?
Salman does not agree. “I think there is a very thin line between being sensual and vulgar when it comes to dance.” Past contestant Meiyang Chang supports him. “Lauren and Salman were aesthetic, poetic and lucid, without being offensive.”
The outfits of the contestants, mostly the women, leave little to imagination. Mouni Roy, for example, played with fire draped in a wet, white sari. Then Puneet and her Bolero and Rumba was less graceful and sensual, and more erotic. Both forms merit that, but Mouni had troublesome wardrobe moments too.
Shakti Mohan, on the other hand, was all grace and carried off her dress, which supported and covered her moves.
Chang recalls, “Was I ever uncomfortable? Yes, once when I had to don a bodysuit. But no one can be forced to do something. As for me, I don’t have the body to go shirtless. But I would if it added some kind of value.”
But rather than being judgmental, we speak to earlier contestants and choreographers for their points of view.
