Will get into politics when I’m ready to give my undivided attention: Riteish Deshmukh
The actor says he’s enjoying his career as an actor and a producer currently
Mumbai: His last two films Grand Masti and Humshakals were dismissed by critics even as they were received well at the ticket windows. Both films were slammed for being vulgar and inane, but that didn’t hamper their collections. And Riteish Deshmukh is having the last laugh of course.
The actor, who’s now basking in the success of his latest film Ek Villain, says, “It’s always good to see a smile on my producer’s face. I’m aware that a certain section of the critics have not liked Humshakals and I totally respect their reviews. But at the end of the day, all that matters is the business that a film does. Being a producer myself, I’m aware the amount of money and hard work that one has to put into the making of a film. So I’m glad that my films are working.”
As a producer Riteish has had a good run so far. His Marathi films Balak Palak won critical acclaim and the other film Yellow went on to win the National Award. Riteish is clearly juggling polar opposites territories of making films that carry a social message and acting in the leave-your-brains-at-home sorts. “It’s a not really a planned move. I act in films that I like and I make films that I believe in. I would have liked to act in both films that I have produced. But neither of them had a role for me.”
Trade gurus call Riteish the new age Mithun Chakraborty. The megastar, with a career spanning three decades, continues to go strong and steady. Like Mithun, Riteish’s career too seems to be unaffected by flop films and criticism. “Seriously, I take that as a compliment. Apart from Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty is one star I genuinely look up to. I’ve followed his career graph very closely. On my 10th birthday, my father (Late Vilasrao Deshmukh) had invited Mithunda for the party. I have been a diehard fan since then. And being compared to him is a huge compliment. I hope, like him I play a long innings.”
Hailing from a strong political background, Riteish has often contemplated whether or not a career in politics would suit him. “Honestly, I have thought about it. Politics is not a profession or a business. It’s a medium for people who are passionate about serving the country. It’s a serious thought. I’ve seen my father and my brother dedicating their lives to the people of the country. I’ll get into politics when I feel I’m ready to give my country my undivided attention. For now, I want to concentrate on my career as an actor. And maybe some day I would like to direct a film too, if I stumble upon a good script.”
