Notification for Mayors election in AP and Telangana

The elections on July 3 will mark the end of the rule of IAS officers

Hyderabad: Nearly three months after polls were conducted to 10 municipal corporations and 145 municipalities, the AP State Election Commission issued orders on Thursday notifying that the indirect election for the posts of mayor, deputy mayors, chairpersons and deputy chairpersons would be conducted in AP and Telangana on July 3 at 11 am.

The election for Mandala Praja Parishad and Zilla (district) Parishad elections will be held on July 4. District and Mandala Praja Parishad vice chairpersons’ elections will be held on July 5.

The elections on July 3 will mark the end of the rule of IAS officers as Special Officers in these local bodies.

Though polling to 10 municipal corporations - seven in AP and three in Telangana - and 145 municipalities - 92 in Seemandhra and 53 in Telangana - was held on March 30 and the results declared on May 12, the SEC had not conducted elections for mayor, chairpersons and their deputies since MLAs and Lok Sabha MPs were yet to take oath and opt for the local body of their choice. MLAs and MPs have voting rights in
elections of mayor and chairpersons along with their deputies.

It were these municipal elections that had set the tone for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. When the results were declared, the Telugu Desam Party had put up a surprisingly strong show to win a majority of municipalities and municipal corporations in the Seemandhra region, while the Congress and TRS emerged first and second in most of the seats in Telangana.

It had been a setback for the YSR Congress as TDP had won a majority of the urban local bodies even in Kadapa district, the home turf party founder, Mr Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. In Telangana, the TDP won the Gajwel municipality, which houses the farmhouse of TRS president, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Of the 92 municipalities in Seemandhra, TDP had won 65 municipalities and YSR Congress 19. Of the seven municipal corporations in AP, TDP had bagged five and YSR Congress two.

In the first ever elections in Telangana region after the announcement of state bifurcation, Congress won two municipal corporations and 21 municipalities. TRS, which spearheaded the movement for a separate state, won one municipal corporation and eight municipalities. In the other municipalities no party got a clear majority.
