On Emergency anniversary, here are some of Indira Gandhi's propaganda films

The Emergency era lasted for 21 months from 25th June 1975 to 21st March 1977

Mumbai: Exactly 39 years ago this day, Indira Gandhi declared a state of Emergency in 1975. The emergency ended after 21 months when the Janata Party won the general election in 1977.

During the period, democracy was brought to a grinding halt. All fundamental rights and legal remedies protected by the Constitution of India were suspended.

Here are a few films related to the Emergency period, which will take you to a different era:

1. Our Indira

This film records the late third Prime Minister of India,Indira Gandhi taking oath of her office and addressing the first ever United Nation

2. “Our Prime Minister”

This film was directed by Yash Choudhary in 1976. The film begins by panning into the address 1 Safdarjung Road – the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi residence. It goes on to portray how she used to meet and greet people.

3. “This is HMT Time”

The film shows how amazing the Indian watchmaker HMT during the Emergency period had a turnover, which exceeded Rs.13 cr.

4. Sorry, I’m late

A short film made in 1975 teaches citizens the importance of punctuality.

5. 'We Have Promises to Keep'

This film collects reactions of cross-section of people about changes brought about by the Emergency for their benefit.
