IB, NSA reports halted Bangladesh liberalised visa

Security agencies had no mechanism to ascertain whether immigrants are gone bck or still staying

New Delhi: It was stiff resistance from the Intelligence Bureau and the National Security Advisor’s office that stalled foreign ministry’s proposed move for a liberalised visa regime with Bangladesh. Sources said both the PMO and the MHA were on the same page strongly opposing the move on three major counts.

The intelligence agencies in their report to the MHA stated that in case Bangladeshis were given visa on arrival, there is no mechanism available with the security agencies to ascertain whether they had gone back or not on the expiry of the visa.

An absence of any such “tracking mechanism’’ would lead to a sharp increase in illegal migration.
