People suffer in dam-hit mandals

Seven submerged mandals of Polavaram project are witnessing administrative vaccum

Khammam: Seven submerged mandals of Polavaram project which have been transferred to Andhra Pradesh are witnessing administrative vaccum as the new government has not yet taken control of the areas.

As a result, the people in these mandals have been facing problems in getting ration, residence certificates and other services from the revenue officials. Students gathered in a big way in front of the Velierpad mandal revenue office on Monday and urged for residence certificates to them to join in educational institutions. But, the students were denied issuing the same by officials, saying computer is not working. The staff in the revenue office tried to evade answers to the queries posed by the wards.

The situation is the same in all the other six mandals in Khammam district, which were gone to Andhra Pradesh after issuing Presiden-tial Ordinance. Kukkunoor MRO Venkata Laxmi said they were in utter confusion over the issuing of residence certificates. People are seeking residence certificates from the Telangana state, but the fact is that these areas were annexed in Andhra Pradesh.

K. Rama Rao, a teacher working in VR Puram said that the Telangana government is showing hesitation to take up any development work in these submerged mandals and Andhra Pradesh government is not coming forward to take up the responsibility of these areas.

“With this, the people were in utter confusion, chaos and shambles,” he said, adding that there was no governance in these mandals and the staff is coming and going without doing any duty. Interestingly, the Telangana government had not even taken applications from nine liquor shops in these seven mandals.

Speaking to this correspondent, a district official said, “It is clear that these seven mandals were given to Andhra Pradesh. Spending single rupee on these mandals is mere waste to the Telagana government and the AP government has to take initiative to take control of these mandals. We stopped all development works in these mandals. We cannot say more than this”. Irrigation department which used to look after small irrigation works in the district also stopped supervising the works in these mandals.
