Jab for animals given to 300 people in Rajasthan
Jaipur: Careless staff of the second biggest government hospital of Jodhpur, Mathuradas Mathur Hospital administered high antibiotic injections to 300 people, which are actually meant for treating animals.
The dangerous goof-up by the subordinate medical staff might have continued for some more time. But, a chance notice by a resident doctor on the written warning on the injection bottle saved the situation from becoming worse. While giving injection to a patient, he spotted the warning that states ‘not for human use, only for animal use’.
On his complaint, the hospital management stopped distribution of the injection from all counters and suspended the pharmacist. However, by then 300 injections had already been adminstered to the patients.
The hospital had received 1000 injection of meropenem under CM’s free medicine distribution scheme but only 700 are now left in the stock.
Luckily, those who were given this injection have not reported any adverse impact, which is quite unusual and surprising.
An inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The sample of injections have been sent to the laboratory.
“Distribution of injection was immediately stopped after it came to our notice that it was meant for animals. The pharmacist has been suspended. However, we are not sure about the number of patients who were given the injections,” said hospital superintendent Dr Deepak Verma.
