Snoopgate incident: Abrupt end to probe

MHA likely to move Cabinet to scrap inquiry panel

New Delhi: Months after the previous UPA government triggered the Snoopgate controversy ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP government is set to give it a quiet burial by abandoning the move to set up a parallel commission to inquire into the charges of alleged surveillance of a woman in Gujarat.

The Union home ministry is expected to move the Union Cabinet to withdraw a previous decision to set up an inquiry commission to probe the charges. Sources said a note will be presented before the Union Cabinet to scrap the December 26, 2013 order to set up a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the allegations.

Minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju has already indicated that the “politically motivated” decision to set up the inquiry commission will be reviewed by the NDA government.

“If a certain Cabinet decision is not implemented then the ministry concerned has to inform the Cabinet secretariat and a move is initiated to withdraw the decision,” an official said.

While the previous UPA government used the Snoopgate controversy to embarrass Mr Modi and target the BJP during the election campaign, the saffron party had strongly opposed the controversial move and demanded that the probe be stopped as a parallel probe had been ordered into the matter by Gujarat government.
