BJP had opposed gas price
New Delhi: A parliamentary standing committee on finance headed by BJP leader Yashwant Sinha in 2013 had asked the UPA government to review its decision to steeply raise domestic natural gas prices.
In its report Economic impact of revision of natural gas price tabled in Parliament in August 2013, the committee recommended that the government should come out with fresh pricing which is more balanced and a reasonable return on the capital invested.
“The committee believes that natural gas is a national resource and a public asset and, therefore, any discourse on its pricing policy should reflect this principle so that it is used for the larger national good and not for profiteering,” the report had said. It raised concern over the rationale for dollar-dominated gas pricing when the revenues are all in rupee and the country has a “chronic adverse exchange rate”.
