AIADMK ministers emerge in open
Interacting with people is the new mantra
CHENNAI: A few youngsters were jogging at Nehru stadium behind Chennai Central railway station on Wednesday, when suddenly a few people clad in dhotis approached them. A man in a safari suit gets his notebook ready, and a shrill voice gives an introduction, “I am a minister and want to know about the facilities here. I will address any shortfalls, if brought to my notice.” The voice belongs to timid sports minister S. Sundararaj.
AIADMK ministers, who usually shun visibility, are now out in the open interacting with morning walkers over civic amenities, boarding government buses to get public opinion and conducting road inspections.
Welcoming the move of the elected representatives, people demand more such regular exercises, as this will improve governance.
Public interaction seems to be the mantra of AIADMK ministers Senthil Balaji, T.K.M. Chinniah, R. Vaithilingam and Dr S. Sundararaj who usually maintain low profiles. The transition is a mystery for babus at the secretariat. As ministers are now staying additional hours, the departure schedule of state secretaries and other government staffers are extended.
Transport minister Senthil Balaji was seen on Thursday shuttling on MTC buses in Chennai. He asked passengers to tell him their experiences while traveling in government buses. During his interaction, he also asked passengers to give their feedback on the behaviour of the bus crew.
Similarly, animal husbandry minister T.K.M. Chinnaiah and M.S.M. Anandan, during their visit to Vandalur zoo on Thursday night, heard grievances from people visiting the zoo. They ordered the park officials to improve the seating arrangements and parking facilities in the zoo.
Information minister Rajendra Balaji is also a busy man during his two-day review meetings with officials. He instructed them to go for the latest technology and high-end computers to speed up IT-enabled services provided by the government.
