Would love to do films where hero and heroine have equal footing: Maria John

Maria Yohanan, aka Maria John, is all set for a comeback
Kochi: It has become a trend in Mollywood for heroines to opt for a name change for reasons personal and professional. The latest to join the name change brigade is Maria John, who will now be known by her screen name Maria Yohanan.
Explaining the reasons for changing her surname, Maria says, “Yohanan is not an alien name; it is my father’s name! My father was in the Army and stationed in north India, where it was difficult for people to pronounce the name Yohanan, which is why he decided to give us the surname John. Though I personally like Yohanan, the name John has been officially recorded on my passport and other IDs, so I am letting that remain. I have chosen to take the surname Yohanan henceforth as my screen name!”
Maria was last seen in the film Red Wine, which was released almost a year back. She was then announced as one of the characters in the film The Last Supper and was even present for the photo shoot, but when the film released, she was missing. Maria’s omission from the film was a shock to her. She reveals, “I was present for the first schedule when some scenes were shot, after which I was informed that there would be a second schedule later on. After waiting for some time, I called up the director Vinil, who informed me that the story had been changed and that my character had lost its relevance! It was a blow to me because whatever I do, I give my 100 per cent and this was so unexpected!” Though this has been a bitter pill to swallow, Maria, ever the optimist, has left that episode behind her.
It has been a year since Maria graced the silver screen and there are lessons she has learnt. “My next movie will almost be like a comeback, so I am choosy about my projects! I have been receiving offers where the heroine has no importance; I would love to be a part of films where the hero and heroine have equal footing. Thankfully, both my upcoming projects give importance to the heroine,” she says.
Maria, who is studying Law in Pune, says, “Although I do not like Law, I know that the shelf life of an actor is limited! Even if I do not have films, I will have Law to fall back upon.”
