New Delhi: Backing rape-accused minister of state for chemicals and fertilisers Nihalchand Meghwal, the BJP on Thursday claimed the case against its leader was a “politically-motivated” effort by the Opposition to malign the image of the Modi government.
The Opposition is mounting pressure for Mr Meghwal’s resignation but the BJP said there is “no question of Nihalchand’s resignation as it is a Congress leaders’ conspiracy”.
The BJP, which otherwise was silent on the issue so far, reacted after its spokespersons and panelists, who participate in TV debates, had a brainstorming session with Union finance minister Arun Jaitley.
“The case against him (Meghwal) is politically motivated... it was during the Congress’ government (in Rajasthan) that the case was closed by the police,” said party spokesperson Shahna-waz Hussain.
In Jaipur, party state unit chief Ashok Parnami defended Mr Meghwal, saying there was no question of his resignation as it was a conspiracy by Congress leaders.
