Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences nurses go on strike
Hyderabad: Seventy-six nurses of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences allege that they have been given termination notice since they were contract workers and their term has been completed.
The nurses protested during the visit of Telangana deputy chief minister Dr T. Rajaiah on Thursday.
The nurses claim that they were appointed in 2006 and their contracts had been renewed earlier.
Uma Devi, a nurse who has been served the notice, said, “There is a dearth of nurses in the hospital. They have already advertised for 200 nurses. Why can’t they regularise us? Terminating those who want to work in the hospital is not justified.”
Nims director Dr L. Narendranath says, “So far, notices have been issued to only 18 of them. Their contract has expired and we cannot keep an employee who does not have a contract with the hospital.”
Administration officials explained that the termination of 18 nurses has frightened the rest and they have all come together fearing that they soon will be served notices.
That is the reason that all 76 of them did not report to work. The others will be issued termination notices as and when their term expires. K. Eshwar Rao, who presented their case to Dr Rajaiah, appealed that they should be taken into service and their contract renewed.
Ayesha Jafri, another nurse, said, “We are graduates in nursing and want to work with the hospital unlike others who take certificates and go abroad. When there is commitment from our side the administration must consider us.”
