Dr Homi Bhabha’s house auctioned for Rs 372cr

Earlier, there were demands to turn the bungalow into a museum

Mumbai: Meherangir, the home of scientist Dr Homi Bhabha in Malabar Hills here, was sold at auction on Wednesday for '372 cr. The auction was conducted by the NCPA, which was in possession of the property after the death of Dr Jamshed Bhabha, brother and sole owner of the property after the death of Dr Homi Bhabha. The NCPA did not disclose the name of the buyer.

The auction had a minimum reserve price of Rs 257 crore.

Trying to put to rest opposition from various quarters that were aga-inst the auction, an NCPA statement said that Dr Jamshed Bhabha had given specific inst-ructions in his will that the property, apart from some personal bequests, was to devolve solely on the NCPA to endow it with sufficient funds for the furtherance of its objectives. The will also directed that a suitable segment of his bequest be earmarked in his name at the NCPA.

The auction was opposed by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre employees who also filed a suit in the Bombay High Court seeking a stay on the auction so that the bungalow could be turned into a museum.
