Bhutanese break their custom, clap for Narendra Modi
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 45-minute address in Hindi, saw the audience breaking into spontaneous applause, something unusual in Bhutan where clapping is done to ward off evil spirits and not to applaud something.
The gathering included Bhutanese PM Tshering Tobgay and members of the National Assembly and the National Council.
Significantly, the visit saw Bhutan assu-ring India that it would not allow its territory to be used agai-nst India. The assurance came against the backdrop of Northeast militants taking shelter in Bhutan.
PM in his address to the Bhutanese National Assembly noted that terrorism divides and tourism unites, according to a tweet by the ministry of external affairs.
The two countries agreed to continue with their close coordination and cooperation on issues relating to their national interests and not allow each other’s territory to be used for interests inimical to the other, said a joint statement issued at the end of the visit.
Bhutan PM's Tweet : PM@narendramodi visit a success: All thanks to the blessings of our Guardian Deities; leadership of our Kings; good fortune of our People.
