World Cup 2014: Germany drubs Portugal
Mueller's hat-trick, Hummels' header power Germany to an emphatic win
Salvador: Thomas Muller scored the first hat-trick of the 2014 World Cup as Germany thumped fancied Portugal 4-0 in their Group ‘G’ match at Arena Fonte Nova on Monday to start their campaign in style.
The Germans rode on goals from Thomas Muller (12th, 45th and 78th minutes) and another from Mats Hummels in the 32nd minute as they left their rivals embarrassed.
Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were clearly outplayed as the Germans ran circles around their defence to frustrate their opponents.
One such ill-tempered incident saw Portugal’s Real Madrid player Pepe sent off for head-butting German striker Muller (in photo), in the 37th minute. Muller now leads the tournament’s goal-scorers list with three to his credit.
