Better late than never: Rains may hit Telangana in three days

Many areas in Telangana still simmer under severe heat

Visakhapatnam/ Hyderabad: The Southwest Monsoon is likely to hit Telangana in the next 72 hours. The monsoon entered Rayalaseema and south coastal AP on Sunday, according to weather officials. Conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoons into Telangana in the next two or three days, they said.

“The monsoon has already advanced onto Bapatla, Nandyal and other areas,” said M. Narsimha Rao, assistant controller, Meteorological Department, Hyderabad.

Rain occurred at isolated places over AP and Telangana. Some areas in Hyderabad also received a few spells of rain starting late in the evening.

But it was clearly not enough. A heat wave warning has been issued for Warangal in Telangana. The Met department said extreme heat wave conditions would prevail in Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari and Krishna districts of AP.

Temperatures remained stubbornly high at many places. Hanamkonda and Adilabad in Telangana recorded 41ºC on Sunday. In AP, Rentachintala recorded 43.5ºC, Ongole 42.1ºC, Kakinada 42ºC, Machilipatnam, Gannavaram and Bapatla 41ºC and Kavali and Visakhapatnam 40ºC.

However, it was definitely cooler than Thursday and Friday, when a large number of heat-related deaths occurred, especially in the coastal districts.

As it is, the monsoon is 10 days late; it was supposed to set in over Andhra Pradesh by June 5, and in Telangana by June 8. The monsoon advanced over the Andaman Sea on May 18, but set in over Kerala on June 6, which is five days later than normal.
