Hindi in Tamil Nadu schools? Parents demand inclusion in curriculum

Students complain that not knowing Hindi dents their job prospects both in India and abroad

Mumbai: In a turnaround of events, Tamil Nadu now wants Hindi to be taught in schools. Parents, along with a group of schools have challenged a 2006 order, according to NDTV reports.

The DMK government previously said that only Tamil will be taught in schools till Class 10. The Madras High Court has sought a response from the state's AIADMK government based on their June 5 petition, according to the report.

Students in Chennai say that not learning Hindi and other languages dents their job prospects both in India and abroad. Schools that come under the Tamil Nadu board say they have lost several students to central board institutions that offer multiple languages.

In 2000, the Madras High Court crushed an attempt to make Tamil the medium of instruction in schools. The court may have the final word, again this time.
