Chennai: Chennai and Bengaluru seem to have more jobs on offer when compared to Delhi or Pune. Consistent with the revival of sentiments seen in IT and ITES sector, the two southern cities have shown an uptrend in corporate hiring for the last three months.
“IT and ITES sectors have brought back the much awaited momentum to the job market in Chennai,” said V. Suresh, executive VP and national head sales of InfoEdge (India) Ltd. In fact, when it comes to growth terms, Chennai beat Bangalore hands down showing 11 per cent increase in hiring compared to 5 per cent in Bengaluru, he said citing Naukiri Job Speak Index for the month of May 2014.
Chennai’s index was at 1,453 showing an 11 per cent increase in hiring activity when compared to April 2014. Though industry-wise hiring sentiment was low-key across all major sectors, ITES hiring that saw a growth of 15 per cent in May’14 over the previous month, helped the city to pip Bengaluru.
“Despite a visible slowdown in the auto sector, we can expect the overall job market to gain further momentum in the coming months,” he added.
Demand for professionals working in BPO and IT saw the maximum growth with the Index moving up by 11 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Professionals working in banking and insurance saw maximum decline with the index moving down by 27 per cent while marketing and advertising saw a dip of 17 per cent in the same period.
Professionals seeking employment in project management and production management have seen a negative inflection with the index moving down by 10% and 7% for the same period.
Though industry-wise hiring sentiment seems muted across all major sectors, hiring activity is seeing a period of stability, said Hitesh Oberoi, MD and CEO Info Edge (India) Ltd. “Since the elections are now over and we have a stable government at the center, we expect companies to start recruiting in the coming months,” he added.
