Haleem kilns set up ignoring safety norms

Many hotels install bhattis without submitting structural stability papers

Hyderabad: With the Ramzan dates being announced, several haleem bhattis have already been set up across the city.

Not many, however, have submitted their structural stability certificates to the GHMC; doing so is mandatory post the City Light mishap that claimed 19 lives and injured hundreds.

Many small hotels take up space on the main road space for their kilns while others construct more than two furnaces on rooftops owing to space constraints. Already material such as wheat bags, bricks and other ingredients are being dumped in a haphazard manner.

Many big hotels also do not have enough space on their ground floors to set up the earthen oven as it consumes a lot of space.

While transporting the haleem after preparing it at a different location and shifting it to the eatery is a tough task, and is seen as a financial burden, many hire function halls and open grounds and set up kitchens for preparing haleem. However, there is every possibility of the building getting damaged due to excessive heat and load of cauldrons, firewood and workers, pointed out a hotel owner.

Meanwhile Ravi Kiran, additional commissioner — Health and Sanitation, GHMC, said, “Garbage and structure are the two issues in the construction of a haleem furnace. During Ramzan, garbage piles up soon and it needs to be disposed immediately. Police officials have warned hoteliers not to violate the norms several times.

The Town Planning department, along with the Health and Sanitation inspector, will conduct inspections to ensure no deviations and inflammable material is not stored in a haphazard manner; kitchens will be also checked for dangerous material.
