Weak structures get notices

805 owners to take correctional measures; no decision on 733 others

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has served notices to 1,538 newly identified dilapidated structures in Greater Hyderabad. Of those served notices, 805 owners have agreed to take up correctional measures immediately. The civic body is yet to decide about the remaining 733 buildings.

Aside from aged structures vulnerable to collapse, dilapidated structures also include under-construction buildings with poorly planned or badly placed pillars.

Under the HMC Act, the municipal corporation can file a police complaint if it finds any ongoing cellar construction (construction of pillars during initial stages) to be dangerous and can initiate legal proceedings against the owner

Of the 130 ongoing cellar constructions in all 18 circles GHMC limits, 58 were found to be dangerous and can prove fatal, according to a survey.

If the owners or builders do not respond to the police complaint or the notice served by the GHMC, GHMC town planning officials can fill the pillar holes by dumping debris in them, hence preventing any further construction.

Somesh Kumar, Commissioner, GHMC said that the GHMC has identified 1,538 dilapidated structures, most of which are in Circles 4, 8, 9 and 18. He added that efforts are on to identify and seal unsafe structures at the earliest.

The Town Planning officials will conduct street-wise survey once again in view of the monsoon season and initiate action under Section 456 of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act.
