Uma Bharati rules out Cauvery board
NEW DELHI: The Union government on Thursday categorically said there was no proposal to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and declared that every effort would be taken to ensure that “injustice” is not done to both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Union water resources minister Uma Bharati said the government would go strictly by the directions of the Supreme Court on the issue of Cauvery river water sharing.
“The proposal was never here. We will do everything according to the directions of the Supreme Court. I can assure that injustice would not be done to both states in this
matter,” she told reporters.
She was responding to questions on reports that the Centre was planning to constitute Cauvery Management Board. “Whatever is asked by the Supreme Court, we will do it,” she said.
The matter relating to constitution of Cauvery Management Board came to the fore yet again after Tamil Nadu Chief minister J Jayalalithaa made this demand during her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.
A week later, a delegation headed by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met Mr Narendra Modi and demanded that the government should wait for a Supreme Court directive in this regard.
