Kerala rains delay monsoon
Visakhapatnam: It might take the monsoon another four days to reach Rayalaseema and subsequently, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The main reason for the delay can be attributed to the continuance of its first spell over the west coastal areas of Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Goa. Prof. O.S.R.U. Bhanu Kumar, professor emeritus, Andhra University, pointed out that this continuance of the first spell of monsoon in the west coast is not good for the east coast.
He said, “Monsoon showers appear in spells. Only after the first spell ends, will the monsoon move forward. It usually takes two to three days after the end of first spell for the second spell to start.” Prof. Kumar said that while the ‘Easterly Jetstream’ is at the desired height of 16 km over Chennai, the ‘Tibetan Anticyclone’ has to develop more maturity for the conditions to become favourable for the Southwest monsoon to advance. On Friday, rain or thundershowers would lash isolated places in coastal AP, Rayalaseema and Telangana.
