Damaged road relaid, traffic back to normal
Kochi: Traffic in the city, which was thrown out of gear on Thursday after the road near Lisie junction caved in during the repair works of the burst KWA pipeline, returned to normal after the damaged stretch was repaired.
“Normal traffic through the stretch was restored by evening after the road was repaired,” said Baby Vinod, assistant commissioner of police (traffic).
After the road caved in on Thursday morning, traffic from North RoB to Kaloor was restricted and heavy vehicles, including buses, were diverted through parallel roads without any prior information.
After the road caved in, sand bags were used to prevent a further collapse. There are allegations that the KWA officials did not take necessary measures to prevent caving in of the road before digging it.
The road caved in when water from the broken pipeline was being drained out after digging a small portion of the stretch. Buses were diverted from Kacheripady, A.L Jacob RoB, Kaloor – Kathrikadavu Road to reach Kaloor.
Since traffic through the busy stretch from North rail over bridge to Kaloor was restricted, the narrow alternate roads became choked with vehicles.
Due to heavy rains and traffic regulation, vehicles had to move at a snail’s pace in many parts of the city roads.
