New Delhi: Adhering to its commitment to “purify and clean” Ganga, the BJP government on Thursday announced its intention to convert the cleaning of the holy river into a “mass movement” and convening of a brainstorming session with environmentalists, saints and MPs next month.
Water resources and Ganga rejuvenation minister Uma Bharati said “Ganga Manthan” would be convened in the first week of July that will have participation from environmentalists, sadhus, scientists, NGOs, people associated with river protection and conservations and lawmakers from seats falling along the Ganga.
“The Prime Minister addressed the parliament yesterday and wanted the people to be part of the development process. I feel that the Ganga Cleaning Mission would be successful only when it becomes a jan andolan (mass movement),” Ms Bharati said.
She said five ministers — water resources, environment, transport, power and tourism – would meet frequently to work out plans to clean Ganga.
