'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is tough and exhausting'

It’s been exciting, tough, exhausting and painful, says Sophie Choudry

Mumbai: Singer-actress Sophie Choudry, a participant on the ongoing season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, has taken on the challenge despite certain health issues. A slipped-disc patient, Sophie says she just couldn’t turn down the show when the organisers approached her this time. “When the show was offered to me in the past, either there were date issues or injuries like a slipped disc. But this year, the team convinced me and showed faith in my ability, so even I was charged to take it up despite my back problem. Besides, I have never formally trained in any form of dance and this was the perfect opportunity to learn,” she says.

Talking about her experience on the show so far, she says, “It’s been exciting, tough, exhausting and painful but as they say, no pain no gain. I had recently gone abroad for an event and couldn’t rehearse for a couple of days. I can’t tell you how much I missed Jhalak house!”

When asked if she plans to perform on any of her popular item songs Sophie says, “Why just item songs? I am first and foremost a singer and I really hope to perform on my own songs, but everything is according to the theme, so let’s see.”

This season has a couple of trained dancers on the show and Sophie admits that matching up to their level is tough. “Well they obviously have a huge advantage. They are used to putting their body through all of this whereas for non-dancers, even basics are difficult to grasp. But at the end of the day, it is about your growth and your journey. And it’s tough for a professional dancer to grow because they are already brilliant,” she says.

Speaking about the other contestants she considers tough competition, Sophie says, “Ashish Sharma for sure, because he can dance and has a massive fan following. Palak (Kiku Sharda) is fab too but it’s the little dhamaka, Akshat, that is going to give us all a run for our money.”
