Greenpeace a threat to security, states Intelligence Bureau report

Greenpeace Foundation refuted allegations of negatively impacting the economic growth

New Delhi: International NGO Greenpeace is in a spot after an Intelligence Bureau report called it “a threat to national security” and accused it of impacting the country’s GDP by initiating agitations and campaigns agai-nst coal and nuclear power plants.

The Greenpeace Founda-tion on Wednesday refuted allegations of negatively impacting the economic growth of the country, reportedly levelled by the IB in its report submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The environmental NGO also wrote to Union home minister Rajnath Singh, seeking the copy of the IB report which has reportedly been leaked.

Greenpeace Foundation communications director Bharti Sinha said her NGO has been active in the country for the past 10 years. She said: “Greenpeace has supported and fought for the people whose voices have been subdued. As far as IB is concerned, it is a very respectable organisation and is carrying out some important functions. We have respect for them and their work. But in this particular matter, we think that they have drawn a wrong conclusion, and we disagree with it. We don’t know about the instances and evidences on which th-eir conclusion is based, but we are ready to engage with the government on this matter.”

Ms Sinha said that Greenpeace has never targeted any specific corporation. She also denied allegations that Greenpeace provided funds to AAP leader Pankaj Singh, and said that it is an “apolitical” organisation.

On the allegations of Gre-enpeace targeting energy and nuclear projects of the country, Ms Sinha said, “It is true that we are against nuclear energy. As other people tried to bring in a strong nuclear liability law in this country, we had also made some efforts in the same direction... There is great danger from nuclear energy.”
