Hunt on for the South Queen

Remake of Kangana’s smash-hit will release in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam

Hyderabad: It’s official, Kangana Ranaut’s Queen will walk down South in all four languages, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, as the remake rights have been bought by Tamil director Thiagarajan.

The search is now on to zero in on the perfect actress, who can pull off Kangana’s portrayal. Pro-remake film-makers in Hyderabad are hoping, Queen doesn’t go down the Kahaani route. Shekhar Kammula’s remake of Vidya Balan’s hit (Anaamika in Telugu) was wiped out at the BO here.

“But Queen cannot be restricted to one language as it’s a universal subject that women can relate to. As of now, I haven’t selected my lead, but I might rope in Lisa Haydon who played Kangana’s friend in the original version to play the same in the remake too,” says Thiagarajan.

The hunt for the lead has now triggered applications from many lead stars down South. An obvious choice seems to be Nayantara, who’s had a presence across all four movie industries. Nayan’s job in Anaamika was appreciated, despite the film’s bad performance. The other choice, surprisingly, is Nitya Menen.

“So what if she’s short. Queen needs the performer, not the glamour girl, the actress has to be ‘best of both worlds’,” says a source.

The Tollywood insider adds, “One thing’s for sure, whoever lands this role will be lucky and under immense pressure at the same time. Queen was a ground-breaking movie and the South’s actress will have to carry the movie on her shoulders. It has to be perfect or we’re looking at the next big disaster.”
