Ministry of Defence to go strict on punctuality

Defence secretary will monitor order, punish errant officers

New Delhi: The Union defence ministry has issued a new order emphasising punctuality for the MoD staff and warning of action against errant officials. The order, issued on June 6, says the defence secretary will personally monitor the matter.

This is a part of a new drive launched under the Narendra Modi government to improve work-culture in government offices. The order says that immediate measures be taken by the concerned supervisory authorities. “In case of violation of office timings”, action will be taken “against such erring employees”.

Another defence ministry order issued on the same day mentions the importance of “general cleanliness” in the office and advises that “immediate action” be taken to ensure this by the concerned officers in “premises under their control”. It also emphasises on the importance of proper maintenance of defence records in orderly manner.

The order also focuses on following the prescribed procedure in handling records and also on records that need to be transferred. It mentions the importance of disposal of old furniture.

Sources said the purpose is to ensure that old furniture does not clutter the office space and that almirahs are not kept in corridors which clutter these spaces.

The orders have been issued soon after the Cabinet secretary wrote to various departments about the need to improve work-culture and maintain hygienic and clean conditions in and around the office.
