Manual Metro doors initially for Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The opening and closing of doors of the metro train that has arrived from Korea is being tested currently as many safety aspects are involved in this operation. The doors will close within 20 seconds, so the crowd boarding and exiting the train must be both quick and disciplined.
To ensure that there are no mishaps, 70 attendants are being trained to operate the doors.
V.B. Gadgil, the chief executive and managing director of L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail project explained, “This is a new hi-tech vehicle. To ensure that all safety aspects are well taken care of, we are training attendants who will operate the doors for some time. The reason being that once the train begins to move, it picks up speed fast and an attendant will be able to alert passengers and check that there are no untoward incidents.”
Passengers are used to travelling in a indisciplined and messy way on Indian trains. This will be disastrous on hi-tech trains like the metro. Until people get used to travelling in a more orderly way, senior officers feel that manual checks must be put in place.
The testing of all aspects of the train like air-conditioning and engineering will take another nine months.
