KPCC not keen on revamping party

Committee reluctant to hand over baton to young blood

Thiruvananthapuram: A section of Congress leaders is unhappy with the unwillingness of the KPCC leadership to revamp the party with young blood. They say the KPCC has not learnt from mistakes though the party constitution says that mandalam and block presidents who have been serving for a decade have to be removed. But the PCC is keen to give them a waiver. This issue will discussed in the DCC presidents’ meeting called by KPCC chief V. M. Sudheeran on Wednesday.

During the tenure of Mr Ramesh Chennithala, he had appointed a five-member committee of senior leaders in all the 14 districts to reach a consensus on choosing booth and block-level leaders avoiding elections.

A prominent KPCC leader told DC that instead of bringing ‘young blood’ in the party right from the booth level, the leadership was persisting with seniors.

According to Mr Sooranad Rajasekharan, KPCC general secretary, some mandalam presidents have been in office for close to 20 years.

“The five-member committee had submitted a report to the then party chief Chennithala during 2013which has since been handed over to Sudheeran. But only after the meeting, it can be known whether Sudheeran will stick to the committee’s recommendation or not,” Mr. Rajasekharan told DC.

Though all the DCC presidents were posted in December 2012, other office-bearers have not been appointed so far. Incidentally, the KPCC’s new organisers also had joined office during February 2013, but revamping at the lower level of the party remained a distant dream.

“Due to the prevalent political issues, the KPCC could not appoint the new list of leaders at the lower level. The earlier committee had recommended that 31 leaders each should be there at the block and district level respectively. And another 280-member committee was recommended at the booth level too during November/December last year which is yet to materialise”, said Thiruvananthapuram DCC president K. Mohan Kumar.
