33 per cent women’s reservation set to become a reality
New Delhi: With the Narendra Modi government enjoying brutal majority in Lok Sabha, 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and legislative Assemblies is all set to become a reality.
The President, Pranab Mukherjee in his speech at the joint session of Parliament on Monday said that the government was “committed” to ensure the long pending contentious reservation for women.
Regional satraps like the SP, the NCP and Lalu Pra-sad Yadav led RJD, opposing the legislation have been marginalised following their poll rout.
Some BJP leaders were also against the legislation. However, with Mr Modi at helm of affairs, this opposition is expected to be silenced.
The legislation has already been pushed through Rajya Sabha but could not get through the lower house and had lapsed following dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha.
Amid public outrage over the gangrape and murder of two girls in Uttar Pradesh and other incidents of crime against women, the Modi government has vowed “zero tolerance” for violence against women.
Mr Mukherjee announced the government will launch ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao’ mass campaign for saving the girl child and enabling her education.
He also said that there will be reform of criminal justice system simpler, quicker and more effective delivery of justice in cases of violence against women.
“In the recent past, the country has witnessed some gruesome incidents of violence against women. The government will have a policy of zero tolerance for violence against women and will strengthen the criminal justice system for its effective implementation,” the President said.
