Main drinking water pipe bursts in Kochi

Pile testing by metro workers damages pipeline from Aluva plant

Kochi: The main pipeline carrying water to the city areas from the Aluva treatment plant burst on Monday evening when the metro construction workers were carrying out pile testing activities at Kaloor.

The pipe burst around 5 pm created a big pit of about three metres in diameter. Water began to gush out, inundating the road and the nearby areas before the Reserve Bank stop.

The development could disrupt drinking water supply to key areas like Vaduthala, Pachalam, Elamakkara, Mulavukad and Chittoor will be affected for the next two days.

“We’ve shut off the valve at Kaloor as the water flowing out was reduced. We have pressed excavators into service besides deploying workers to fix the problem. It might take sometime, even two days,” a KWA official said.

This is the second time, the pipeline burst was being reported from the Kaloor site. The metro authorities blamed the Kerala Water Authority for failing to give a drawing of the underground pipelines and their directing despite repeated demands.

The metro works at the RBI side has been suspended following the incident.

Earlier on March 2, a similar pipeline burst was reported before the Reserve Bank of India, forcing authorities to stop water supply for the whole day.
