New Delhi: The Indian government reacted swiftly on Monday to Sunday night’s terrorist attack on Karachi airport in Pakistan, and put all airports across the country on heightened alert.
The number of CISF Quick Reaction Teams has been increased, tightening access control at all airports, stiffening perimeter security and ordering mock drills by anti-hijack units at airports. Security audits at all airports will also be completed.
Top Intelligence Bureau officials also briefed Union home minister Rajnath Singh on potential threat and their preparedness to protect the nation’s vital assets, including airports, nuclear power plants and major industrial units, including those in the private sector.
Sources said the home minister had directed the IB and the ministry’s own internal security division to undertake a fresh security audit of all major venues and give him a detailed report in the next few days on the threat perception. Similar drills are being undertaken for all major seaports as well.
The home minister held a high-level meeting to review security arrangements at airports, that was attended by the heads of all key security agencies. It was noted at the meeting that like the terrorists who had struck at Karachi airport, Pakistan-backed militants may well try and attack vital Indian establishments and make atte-mpts to hijack aircraft.
