17 cops get life imprisonment in fake encounter case
New Delhi: A special CBI court on Monday awarded life imprisonment to 17 of the 18 Uttrakhand Police personnel and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on seven cops in a fake encounter case of a 22-year-old MBA graduate that took place 2009 in Dehradun.
The court had on Friday convicted 18 cops guilty of killing the victim, Ranbir, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. The court also directed 10 other policemen, convicted for conspiracy to kidnap and kill Ranbir, to furnish a fine of Rs 20,000 each. The collected fine will be given to the family of the deceased as compensation.
The defence counsel had argued before the court that Ranbir who was gunned down by the cops was a part of extortion racket. It was also argued that Ranbir was riding a bike along with his two aide and they snatched the revolver of cop when they were stopped for checking ahead of President Pratibha Patil’s visit to Uttarakhand on July 3, 2009. However, the court rejected their point.
In 2009, Ranbir Singh, an MBA student from Ghaziabad, was shot dead by police at Mohini Road in Dehradun. The Uttrakhand police had alleged that Ranbir was a member of an extortion racket.
