Curbing food inflation is priority: New PM agenda

Government will take effective steps to prevent hoarding and black marketing

New Delhi: Bringing down inflation and reviving growth will be on the top of the economic agenda of the BJP led NDA government headed by Narendra Modi. President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday outlined the economic vision of the new government in his address to the members of the Parliament.

The new government will strive to rationalise and simplify the tax regime so that it is non-adversarial and conducive to investment, enterprise and growth. The government will try to create a policy environment which is predictable, transparent and fair.

Government will strive to move towards a single-window system of clearances both at the Centre and at the states through a hub-spoke mode. Environment and forest clearance systems will be made more predictable, transparent and time-bound. The government will formulate clear and transparent policies on allocation of critical natural resources such as coal, minerals and spectrum.

“Containing food inflation will be the top most priority for my government. There would be an emphasis on improving the supply side of various agro and agro-based products,” said Mr Mukherjee in his address to Parliament.

He said that the government will take effective steps to prevent hoarding and black marketing and will reform the Public Distribution System by incorporating best practices from the states.

“My government is alert about the possibility of a subnormal monsoon this year and contingency plans are being prepared,” said Mr Mukherjee.

President said that government is determined to rid the country of the scourge of corruption and the menace of black money. On the economic front, he said that India is passing through an extremely difficult phase.
