Maharashtra: Africans referred to as 'N*****s' in SSC textbook

Factual mistakes continue to appear in textbooks despite alerts from teachers

Mumbai: Of the many errors pointed out in Maharashtra SSC textbooks by teachers, the state textbooks continue to call Africans as 'N*****s', as reported in the Midday. Several other mistakes had previously been pointed out by teachers and the media last year, but they continue to appear in the textbooks published this year.

According to the report, a history teacher from Vashi pointed out that some chapters were not structured well, others had major grammatical and spelling errors. Some were even factually wrong.

Glaring errors like ‘Sewage Canal’ instead of ‘Suez Canal’ appeared in the textbooks last year, which drew media attention. The state board had then asked the Board of Studies for the History subject had to look into matter. However, the textbooks are still not error free.

Here are few of the errors that appeared in the textbooks:

- Africans are referred to as N*****s throughout the textbook

- Iconic Russian author Alexander Pushkin has been referred to as Alexandria Pushkin

- Page 6 defines globalization as: When world is improving its economic condition has effected the world that is called world economy.

- The International Labour Organisation is called the International Workers' Union

- Hungary is spelt 'Hungery', Bulgaria as 'Bulgeria' and the Warsaw Treaty as 'Warsa Treaty'
