Rape is accidental: BJP minister
Raipur: Chhattisgarh home minister Ram Sevak Paikre on Saturday caused huge embarrassment to his government by saying, “Rape is not committed intentionally, but it happens accidentally”.
“Balatkar jaisi ghatna ko koi janbujh kar nahin karta hai. Dhokese sab karte hai (no one commits rape intentionally, it is committed by deceit), the minister told reporters here while reacting to sudden spurt in rape incidents in the state in recent times.
Mr Paikre apparently meant to say that the rape victims usually fall into the trap of the accused who commit the heinous crime after promising to marry them.
However sensing the negative fallout of his statement, Mr Paikre hastened to add that he condemned rape incidents. “We have taken swift action in such incidents”, he said.
His MP counterpart Babulal Gaur, had earlier dropped a bombshell when he reportedly said that rape was sometimes right and sometimes wrong.
Mr Paikre however expressed concern over growing incidents of rape in the state in recent times. He said strong measures were needed to curb violence against women in any form.
He has a reason to worry as Chhattisgarh has witnessed a jump in rape incidents by 33 percent in the past one year.
Meanwhile, In a new twist to Badaun gangrape and murder case, Uttar Pradesh DGP A.L. Banerjee on Saturday said rape of one of the two girls, who were found hanging from a tree, was not confirmed by forensic experts and that property could be a motive for the crime.
“Of the two victims, one was a lone child. Her father has three brothers. In case she is not alive, then it can benefit others.
Property can be one of the motives. I am not saying that this is the motive,” Mr Banerjee said.
Many facts had come to light after fore-nsic experts visited the crime scene. Rape of one of the victims was not confirmed by the experts, the DGP said.
