Mob lynches jawan on India, Bangladesh border
Agartala: A BSF jawan was lynched after a man was killed in firing by border guards as they came under attack from villagers while chasing smugglers close to the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, but the villagers gave a different account of the events.
When the BSF personnel were chasing smugglers on Friday night, villagers of South Ramnagar attacked the border guards with lathis and choppers, DIG B.S. Rawat said.
“Our jawans opened fire in self defence in which one villager died and 10 others were injured. In a retaliatory attack, one BSF jawan, Sandeep Kumar, was lynched by the locals,” Mr Rawat said.
Meanwhile, Bhanu Mia, brother of the villager Ismail Mia who was killed in BSF firing, in an FIR with the police said that the border guards opened fire after picking up a quarrel with them when they were resting near a pond.
SP Uttam Bhowmick said “The jawan had head injuries and cut marks on his body.” West Tripura district magistrate Abhishek Singh, said a magisterial level inquiry has been ordered.
