Pakistan girl shot in face, survives

The attack comes 10 days after a 25-year-old woman was stoned to death outside Lahore High Court

Islamabad: A teenage girl in Pakistan, who was shot twice and thrown in a canal by her family for marrying the man she loved, has survived the murderous assault, police said.

Saba Maqsood, 18, was attacked by her father, uncle, brother and aunt before she was tossed into the canal, said Ali Akbar, a spokesman for police in Hafizabad, Punjab province.

Attack on Saba comes just a week-and-a-half after the honour killing of a 25-year-old woman in Lahore drew worldwide condemnation.

“Even though police provided me with security, I fear that my family will try to kill me and my husband,” Saba, still weak after being shot twice in the cheek and right hand, said.

Police said Saba’s relatives quickly fled the scene after attacking her, but after minutes in the water she regained consciousness and managed to struggle to the bank.
